It wasn’t just wanting some material things, it was the idolization of extravagance/wealth as if that’s what a dream life is when a dream life is about happiness and fulfilling relationships. It’s the valuing of materialistic items over what it actually means to be successful in life. American society values the wrong things like consumerism. It’s important that we all keep each other in check
Coming from a poor college student. Ive never really had the chance to overly splurge. I can only afford whats needed. The people who are obsessed with consumerism are people in CC debt. If we want to go deeper, new age rich folks glamorize this lifestyle to get the poors to buy and feel rich. Its predatory, so many things embrace this behavior like afterpay etc. Becoming poorer by the day bc of trying to be like others or not feel poor for once.
Exactly. I grew up in a financially insecure household but most of my extended family grew up pretty well off with name brand this and that. When I was like a pre teen I became obsessed with keeping up them and wanting certain clothes, name brands, wanting to move into a nicer home, my parents to have nicer cars etc. Then we lost our home bc of the pressure of my parents to do a huge renovation on the house that we couldn’t afford. As I get older, I’ve learned to value these things less and less
In china they banned celebrities from flaunting their wealth so much. People felt they had to match up or become depressed. We are being influenced more than we think into giving into this wants. However the post, i did not agree with the message initially bc it was a known talking point to try and end arguments. I guess for that post it meant dont talk like your shit dont stink.
And now I feel sad for ppl like my extended family and others for idolizing wealth so much. They seem so unhappy and unfulfilled. As I’ve educated myself more on the economy, the exploitation of land and resources, environmentalism etc I’m just disgusted at ppl who focus on these things. I’ve learned to appreciate what true happiness is and it’s a good community. Not to have x job so that I can afford the SUV and white picket fence
Since i was a child ive lived on my mom pay of merely 1k per month Like again you wanted to keep up? Help so did i but in a way im happy i was poor. Too many children are obsessed individuality: nothing wrong being yourself however its like playing a character of yourself and not being you. I value my things a lot. I still have my umbrella from kindergarten lol. People are too much into disposable iteims to a point they dont care about quality. Im sorry that happened though,
You’re making the assumption that the people who want materialistic things don’t want those other things though. Just because I collect figurines and want a nice house someday with the money I’ll be working hard for doesn’t mean I don’t want to be happy and have fulfilling relationships..? We could be spending this energy going after the people/corporations doing wide scale damage to our society
Nearly the entire vision board was just like displays of extravagance tho? If I was to make a vision board of the dream life I’m working towards it wouldn’t include a fancy car, house and clothes and a black Amex. It’d mostly be images of nature, books, art, music, my cats, happy people, vibrant communities, socialism etc. their dream life was like the epitome of individualism and capitalism. As a socialist I just find it really sad 😭
I’m sure they want happy relationships too but as someone who used to idolize those kinda things for my dream life, it’s clearly the chasing of wealth and displays of wealth that is their ultimate goal. As if as long as you have x amount of money and designer this and that, everything else like happiness and good relationships will fall into place. When that’s just not true. Chasing this kind of lifestyle will leave you forever unfulfilled and disconnected bc it will never be enough
Maybe next time just scroll past the post and go take a few minutes to calm yourself down? I don’t want all of that stuff either but it’s ok for people to dream a little and talk about the things they’re like to express themselves with, especially when everything’s so depressing right now! Having different taste doesn’t mean I have to belittle someone and insult their entire personhood over it yk?
I’m calm. I like to critique the world and think critically about things. I think hot posts like that are getting a lot of upvotes should be critiqued if it’s pushing the wrong message onto girl talk. If it didn’t receive so many upvotes I would have just scrolled I didn’t belittle anyone, all I said was “yikes” and then someone wished for me to lose my livelihood. and then quoted it to address girl talk bc I was referring to the massive amount of upvotes. Not just op
Alright well I guess we can safely assume that whoever that person was is completely materialistic and doesn’t care about anything except for expensive objects and big status symbols, she definitely doesn’t care about making friends or contributing to her community. I agree with you now
You said everything but the dog and stroller were bad, I totally agree. Everything else was so wasteful and unnecessary, she should walk everywhere instead of burning fossil fuels and share an apartment with a group of friends, that sounds much more like a dream to me than killing our planet
