Don’t let this distract you from the fact that our government is shut down because republicans don’t want you to have health insurance and democrats don’t want you to have affordable health insurance while BOTH sent billions to Israel, who has free health insurance and education, during the shut down to kill babies.
the whole song butchers ophelia’s character anyway, but, while Ophelia wasnt a princess by title, she had ties in the royal family via Polonius and her relationship with Hamlet (which positioned her to become princess, had that relationship actually gone through to marriage). Its not unreasonable to assume she’d have princess-style dresses
her reference doesn’t make sense at all because Ophelia was not a woman that needed a man to save her — she needed the opposite. The reference just doesn’t work when she’s painting Ophelia as a princess in a tower needing her hero when the whole point was that she was a woman who needed autonomy and independence.
It’s also the death of her father (whom Hamlet killed) and that she is completely alone in the end without a man to make a choice for her. Her first choice she makes without a man telling her or making a choice for her is to drown herself because she lacks autonomy or the ability to exist without a man.
Ive seen people saying this a lot and what exactly do you mean? Because Ophelia’s fate is directly linked to all the things you and others are dismissing. If she didnt want her song to address the complexities of Ophelia’s character and just wanted to say “my love life sucked and i hated romance until i got my incredible boyfriend” then she shouldnt have referenced Ophelia.
and if she’s only referencing ophelia’s death, then she shouldn’t emphasize how literary her reference is when she could have used the name of literally anyone who’s died. it just feels shallow and i’d expect more from TS, given how much she’s praised for the supposed “depth” of her writing.
