Such a letdown. Safe to say I am very disappointed and this will hurt for a long time. 4 years ago it ended the same way. Getting dominated by a European side who is so much better than us. It’s hard to have faith in this team after this performance and I don’t know if it will get better by the next World Cup because this was supposed to be the greatest generation in USMNT history.
This game was even worse to me because a lot of the players just seemed to give up when the going got tough and they didn’t know where to go with the ball. You know the lyrics “knees weak arms heavy, mom’s spaghetti” lyrics by Eminem in the song Lose yourself? That was this US team. So much so they were forcing passes and the goalkeeper Freese made a terrible decision to come out of the goal with the ball and give away the ball. This game had so many comedy of errors but I know who I’m blaming..
They didn’t reverse their decision, they suspended it (meaning if Balo gets another red card within his 1 year probationary period he would serve a 2 game suspension), which FIFA is allowed to do under Article 27, and the VAR broke FIFA’s rules to issue said red card in the first place. Again, it’s not karma, the only people mad about this are mad because supposed corruption favored a non-South American/European team for once.
I don’t know how much I believe that this USMNT was a “golden generation”. It was an embarrassing, uninspiring and lackluster game from USMNT. As usual, Christian Pulisic shrinks when the moment gets big, Freese froze, and Balogun didn’t deliver when we needed it most. Mind you Iran in the group stage played this same Belgian team and held them to a 0-0 draw. We lucked out in the group stage and playing Bosnia in the Round of 32 was quite a gift.
Not a golden generation but they were the best and most talented team in US history with a modern manager and on paper are expected to give Belgium a good game. The whole tournament and before it, they built the hype and beat a Paraguay team who held France to 1 goal. Bosnia are actually a decent team they kept out Italy in the qualifiers. USA just broke under the pressure to me which to be granted was a lot of pressure, but a lot of the game it didn’t seem like they were trying at all
Trust me I thought it would at least be a close game. From Freese’s first save, I thought to myself, it’s going to be a long afternoon. BTW Italy is weird and inconsistent as hell. Ever since winning the WC in 2006 they qualified for 2010 and 2014 but didn’t even make it past the group stage. Since then they’ve not even sniffed the WC. Honestly the team I’m most surprised by is Brazil. This is their longest drought of not winning a WC.
The rule they broke was that the VAR is supposed to only apply slow motion replays to identify the point of contact in a red card situation. They instead used freeze frames and slow motion loops of Balogun stepping on Tarik (Bosnia player’s) ankle. This made the accidental falling collision look like a stomp. So the VAR misused the rule here since the ref on the field looking at the play as it happened didn’t give a card
But this red card that shouldn’t have been a red card isn’t supposed to be repealed by the FIFA process but we got the suspension of that and the controversy. But this rule caused this whole mess in the first place since red cards carry an automatic ban for the next game if the team advances
Again they broke FIFA’s rules to get the red card enforced in the first place. I don’t give a shit how much credit that orange wants to take for it. You cannot complain about supposed corruption in Balo’s case when Messi got away with doing the same thing with no VAR interjection or yellow card.
i think the decision to recall the red card before the game threw a lot of the players off, bc it was definitely an unfair decision. i don't think the us would have won either way though, bc they only have the one strategy- chip the ball to the forward over and over and hope it eventually goes in. thier defense is solid, but their style of play is very one dimensional in the offense. eventually they would have run into a team with better touches and diverse passing, and they wouldn't be able to
i root for the womens team because despite the fact that they are SO successful, they get paid less, and get less media attention than the mens teams. also because when i was a little girl who played travel soccer, seeing megan rapinoe dominate her games was cool asf. its fun to watch good teams. the mens team isnt fun to watch, because all they have going for them is endurance- very little technical skill compared to other teams
Sure the men’s team is less technical, but the problem I had with their play is the way they gave up. The USA lost 2-1 to an even better Belgium team in 2014 but they had that fighting spirit to try new things but this iteration of the US team seemed to have given up trying to attack a little after the half. The hunger in their play is lacking because they have not played under adversity much at all and their spirit is broken. The US women’s team has this spirit
Now they have 4 years to fix it but I don’t know how it can be better they may do worse next World Cup. Not sure how morale/effort was so low as this was the game to put everything into finding a win but they were content in protecting the score line to not be more embarrassing after the half. The US women would never
