Mark was a very central to the group, and arguably the most talented and iconic member that defined their sound. He was in multiple sub-units (aka being in multiple kpop groups at the same time) which led to him being extremely busy and overworked. He left all the groups entirely and basically quit being an idol, wanting to focus on a new chapter in his life.

Mark is a member of a K-pop group called NCT. NCT is like an umbrella group; there is 26 members in total, but multiple subunits (smaller groups) with around 7 members each. Mark was arguably the most important and iconic member of NCT, as he was in MULTIPLE subunits & had huge parts in every song (insane schedule/overworked). So people are shocked because it was unexpected, and he is the most well-loved and iconic member. It is detrimental to his groups. But ultimately it is good for his well-being, as he was overworked, and he gave up his entire childhood and adult life since 13 years old to become an idol. Now he can live his life how he wants. K-pop is a massive industry. While there are maybe ~40-50 substantially popular boy/girl-groups that have reached global success, there are hundreds more that have lesser or varying degrees of success. Long story short, there are a LOT of groups.
