A white man playing Heathcliff (whose Romani ancestry and darker skin is integral to his character), a 35 year old woman playing a teenager, and an electro pop artist contributing to the soundtrack of a movie set in the 18th century? I’ll pass

Literally😭 I love margot but like i don’t think I’d be as sympathetic to Catherine’s actions if it wasn’t a literal teen. And also Heathcliff’s treatment literally stemmed based on racism and why their relationship was not feasible in the story.

What’s frustrating is this movie is going to be how the new coming generations predominantly perceive the story of Wuthering heights. Just like Pride and prejudice or like I said Gatsby, everyone knows the movie version, not everyone knows the book. If you’re going to popularize the story through a movie, at least don’t dumb it down horrendously

I think Charlis versatile enough to carry this out, even if her main style has been hyperpop- but the problem is how questionable the movie itself is seeming 💔

that doesn’t really get the point across about the racial tensions and discrimination of the time period esp when they have a POC playing Edgar which throws another wrench into any semblance of being a somewhat accurate adaptation instead of another vanity project

they have catherine wearing an ugly modern white wedding dress when this is literally set before that was ever a thing 💀 if this had to be made i would have preferred it to be an original rather than a hack-job of emily bronte’s only novel — now people will think that this is all it is 😕

i’ve disliked the director ever since Pretty Young Woman basically punished the protagonist for trying to get revenge on SAers… now she’s white washing Heathcliff with a white australian frankenstein while simultaneously making Linton a person of color.. 😭😭 don’t understand why this couldn’t have been switched? why change races/ethnicities when they’re literally important to the plot i.e. why heathcliff can never be with catherine 🫩

exactly, it’s obvious what audience they’re catering to with the casting so it makes sense why they don’t care about the casting for heathcliff.. :(( All of the wuthering heights adaptions have a white man as heathcliff like get jacob Anderson in or smthing 😭

In the novel his race is ambiguous, though he’s not white. There are lines that say he is Romani and others say he’s Indian.

I will say I didn’t hate Gatsby either. I think it did a good job highlighting the absurdity and fast paced atmosphere Fitzgerald was trying to get across. I just didn’t like the music - rap and Lana Del Rey, I wish they stuck to jazz or big band. But still, modernizing something that’s supposed to be statement on the time it was written just feels off to me.

Wait. I just heard a very interesting theory: the title is in quotation marks. Some of the wardrobe is regency era (accurate for the time period) and some of the wardrobe is Victorian. Margot Robbie might not be Catherine, but a Victorian woman imagining herself as Catherine.

I mean, just last year we had a non-white actress playing Snow White, are you really surprised that character’s aren’t portrayed as their original race anymore? Far from the only example mind you. Not saying it should happen, just saying that it isn’t surprising.

It just means that it’s going to likely be very dated in not too long as it’s going to be super “of the time” so it sadly won’t age well.

Yeah that’s what I’ve been thinking seeing announcements like the casting for this. Not saying that it is or isn’t an issue, but it has been happening a lot recently so it is less surprising now.

movies like snow white or the little mermaid are explicitly fictional and magic plays a significant role — the race of the characters are not really important to the plot. wuthering heights is a gothic novel based on historical realities of class and race driving the main characters apart, so making both characters white directly undermines a main component of the story.

Yeah I mean I also didn’t think that was a good idea because Snow White having skin white as snow is what she’s named after lol. However, I wasn’t ever going to watch it because I swore off Disney live actions after what they did to Mulan. I just expect Disney live actions to suck at this point
