Hantavirus is not joke 30-50% fatality rate in the west *with* treatment. COVID was 1-10% (depending on strain and vaccine availability) and it still killed MILLIONS worldwide, and just for perspective, the Black Death was 60-70% and wiped out 1/3 of Europe. They need to go to an isolated island and only interact with specialists from the WHO.
Wtf does researching the virus have to do with leaving sick people to die on a boat. Seriously you guys make me feel like I’m in a simulation sometimes. You idiots are literally scared of something that’s killed 3 people thousands of miles away across an ocean. Take your own advice my God
not without having them dock and expose the disease to who knows how many others. disease spreads FAST, especially given how many people we come into some form of contact with in a day. i say keep them on the boat until they're cleared, and then they can dock. until then it's quarantine vacation for them
U should research this disease cuz clearly u haven’t. The disease rarely spreads from person to person, it is mainly spread by contact with infected rodent waste, so the threat of them docking isn’t ANYWHERE near as high as Covid or any flu virus. Secondly, sacrifice the few to potentially save the many is fucking morbid. Try ur best to save everyone always
Well based off that, if only infected rodents can give it to humans that means there are rodents on the boat? It’s infected 3 people leading them to die either they had this disease or received it while on the boat, then apparently 4 others have been affected so I can see where it may sound like it can be transmitted human to human then considering viruses mutate….We don’t have enough info yet obviously, even the news headlines are not helping with over exaggeration of instant death 😭
If you guys actually knew anything about what you were talking about you’d know that’s cause to be less worried about a broader outbreak. And that diseases with high mortality tend to have significantly diminished communicability bc the patients are too sick to go out and spread it. Unlike asymptomatic covid. Not to mention you have to have prolonged close contact and touching to get this. You’re not going to get it by walking past somebody in a hallway. These people got it trapped on a small sh
This person actually thinks it's impossible to quarantine them "without having them dock and expose the disease to who knows how many others" Actually it's completely possible. people train and build careers around this. Are you people serious. How do 30 + of you upvote this. I can't believe we're of the same species. Proper PPE and quarantine protocols exist…
Like what does that even mean, “…is as dense as you’re hopefully acting”. You’re not a nice person. You’re not smart. You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re an angry emotional troll who enjoys being mean and being a keyboard warrior on the internet despite how it affects anyone else. Try taking a look at yourself in the mirror before you start throwing stones. Which you do literally everyday while smugly giving your own atrocious behavior a pass. While being the worst of us
The bubonic plague was from fleas on rodents too, they spread fast. Viruses mutate. They should be quarantined until virologists know more and potentially figure out a way to prevent any spread. Honestly if you have to be quarantined, a cruise ship doesn’t seem like the worst place to be stuck.
The high mortality rate leading to less spread bc people are too sick to move is just speculation. Truth it if that wad the case then the black death wouldn’t have done shit, but instead it wiped out half of europe. Why? Because people don’t give a shit and will go around anyways. Or it spreads to their caregivers who then can spread it more before they enter the death stage. Proper PPE can still fail and people can also do the thing called disobeying quarantine bc they don’t care.
Update, a man in Switzerland who was on the boat and left early has contracted the Andes strain of the hantavirus (which is the human to human) is home in Switzerland, currently in the phase of back tracing his steps to see everyone he potentially came in contact with for further investigation. We are screwed.
You are under the assumption the sick people actually understand disease and care enough to obey quarantine, which from what we’ve seen from covid is clearly not the case. You should volunteer to get on the ship to care for them if you care that much but don’t go around sacrificing other people.
Again u clearly don’t understand this disease. Ppl don’t need to be quarantined. It doesn’t spread like that. We have like 200k cases of this disease annually. It’s not a big deal to dock and let them get treatment. I repeat transmission has never been a big concern with this disease
The black plague still exists u fucking idiot. It’s just not a problem in modern civilization because we don’t live in literal shit and piss. In ancient Europe ppl used to live on top of each other in extremely disgusting cities with both human and animal waste all over the place, THAT is why it spread so much. Those circumstances are not an issue now. It’s the same with this disease.
I’m aware it exists, but we actually have good treatment for it now unlike the hantavirus where we don’t have that. Now understand that in a cruise ship they’re living right on top of each other? Hopefully not in shit and piss but they are all mingling very germy. Also the plague didn’t spread through that anyways, idiot.
I think youre the one that doesnt understand disease buddy. People do need to be quarantined. We have 200k cases even after measures are in place because this shit still spreads. Or alternative, let help go to them instead of unleashing the disease onto innocent people? Again if you are willing to risk it you should volunteer to go onboard and help them since apparently you understand disease so much better than the college forum packed with biology students
Idk what country u live in but we don’t have any measure to prevent hantavirus here in the US. It’s not a concern. In a cruise ship of thousands of ppl, only 5 have gotten it and they are all living on top of each other in an extremely dirty environment. The spread of person to person is rly not a concern, multiple ppl have gotten it cuz they are living in the same contaminated environment. I don’t think ur understanding this
They wouldn’t need to land with a helicopter at all if they didn’t want to, they have flight paramedics who are specifically trained in rappelling who could drop themselves down or supplies down even. More common in search and rescue but not unlikely for standard flight paramedics. Another boat would probably be safest anyways, less vertical risk
You can’t keep people on a ship that is having a virus spread through rodent excrement (meaning most likely a contaminated food source) to quarantine because the virus is already present, there is no quarantine and if you force people to stay on said boat and consume food from the on board pantry’s then anyone who does become infected and dies is on your hands, because you forced them to stay on a boat with limited food and known possible contamination in the food available.
Ehem sister here actually. Great so there were only 150ish people on the boat, so not thousands of lives but there will be hundreds of thousands of deaths should we not properly consider the situation. I’m not joking I’m serious, 150 lives don’t outweigh millions. Quarantine the fuckers or sink the ship.
