The point is “you SAVED me from the fate of Ophelia”… being manufactured by the men in her life, tossed around, I loved you I loved you not, but before she can “drown in the melancholy” her current lover comes in and saves her. That’s what the song is about… “no longer drowning and deceived” being a clear reference not only to Ophelia’s famous death but also “I was the more deceived” in act three scene one, the real turning point towards her madness when hamlet sort of emotionally tosses her
As someone who makes lyrical music with my piano, screw you for thinking only your kind of music can have soul to it?? If you don’t connect to the lyrics that’s one thing (I connect to hers tbh especially on folklore and ttpd) and if the sound isn’t your thing that’s an opinion but don’t come for a guitar or piano as the background :/
I’m not saying that a guitar or a piano can’t fill the space and I never said only my kind can have soul lol. it’s just that she doesn’t make them fill the space. I have no problem with duet pieces but for the new album there were songs with rather bizarre lyrics paired with pop chord progressions and rather choppy mixing (not bad mixing but it’s fast iykwim)
You do know you just described almost ALL musicians nowadays right? Saying “you can’t criticize her art because your art hasn’t received nearly as much attention as hers has” none of the albums that are my favorites have been nearly as acclaimed as hers and some of these artists have massive fan bases. Her music just feels low effort and low passion to me, especially compared to her previous work (esp folklore imo).
My point being is that you stating you know music literally makes no difference. Your opinion is still just that. An opinion. There’s no weight behind it. People who are critically acclaimed are there because they are just that because they’ve been proclaimed by professionals. You have not been. You can criticize, but your criticism holds no meaning.
I agree with you, but because the USA is so fiscally involved with those committing a genocide, is it not the responsibility of Americans to speak out against it more? Because our country is actively aiding a genocide we have (somewhat) the power to end it. What are we then, if we fail to speak up? Against any of these human crisis certainly but also against the one we are committing?
Saying “other genocide” is gaslighting the issue at hand. Willing to bet in school when they let the Down syndrome kid win in gym class instead of cheering you say “what about the other ones”. Palestine implies elsewhere besides those are civil and not funded by your tax dollars to a country who has free healthcare and education while your country raises those expenses domestically
“No longer drowning and deceived” feels like a reference to Ophelia telling hamlet “I was the more deceived” in act three scene one, the turning point to her loss of sanity (also referenced in the song) before she drowns (referenced a LOT in the song, as expected). Her point with the song is that she could have ended up like Ophelia, because she felt like the men in her life were using her as a pawn and pushing her emotions around and it was driving her crazy, but then her lover SAVED her
She’s definitely read hamlet. Her point with the song is that she ISN’T Ophelia because of the person who is in her life now. Honestly the fate of Ophelia as a song is a much better use of hamlet than love story ever was of Romeo and Juliet. Love story is such a bad use of Romeo and Juliet that it makes me physically revolt and yet it’s a bop and so is the fate of Ophelia. Sometimes you gotta just let a pop artist make catchy tunes. But the fate of Ophelia actually does work as a literary ref
You have literally no good basis for this 😂 “I personally refuse to believe that this cultured woman could have possibly read one of the most famous plays ever, therefore obviously it’s just the producer who had read the play” shut up you don’t even know her, the likelihood that she’s read hamlet is SO high
I agree with you and don’t deny our involvement in both, but Israel is the leading recipient of US foreign military aid and are more formerly invested in the existence of Israel that with China and the RSF. I’m just happy we both agree all of these conflicts deserve more of our attention and protest against, and that TS is completely silent in speaking out.
If you are assigned to read Shakespeare, then you read Shakespeare. You replied to my comment of “reading it is super common” with “assigning it is super common.” Meaning you did NOT read Shakespeare in HS/College. In what way does any of that make me stupid, when I in fact, did read Shakespeare in 9th grade English?
That was a tragic terrorist attck, no doubt and I don’t “support” Hamas. BUT I do have an issue with genocide, which Israel is unequivocally committing. Idk how it’s so hard to understand that nuance. You cannot fight terrorism with ethnic cleansing. Besides, if you even understood a shred of Israel and Palestine’s history you would know this didn’t start October 7th. Peace and education to you my friend
“ some genocides are more important than others….” that is such a privileged statement to make. if we speak for one, we speak for all. and what would count as “an important genocide?” because if u ask me, ALL genocides have killed innocent lives. no life should be at the cost of others.
The proof is in the lyrics lmao Ophelia offed herself because she was being controlled by the patriarchy, Taylor seems to have confused the tragedy of Ophelia with a damsel in distress that needed a man to save her (which is the opposite of what Ophelia needed, she needed to get away from men). If Taylor was trying to make that point she could have literally used any other princess as a reference
