There’s so much hate around Taylors new album but I lowkey like it, it’s like she had Sabrina help her with some of the song writing aside from being a ft artist which is why it’s a little more pop and sexual than her usual stuff. Idk it’s kinda nice having songs that aren’t about awful breakups
Imo it’s more of a sign that popularity of music has significantly fragmented with the increase in streaming and decline of radio. More people are specifically choosing what songs to listen to instead of having the radio play songs for them, so they’re listening to a much bigger variety of stuff and the Billboard 100 matters less.
The way Billboard ranking works, buying merchandise with an album as an add-on (I.e. bundles that come w merch), and buying any sort of add on to the album (think of all the rereleases and different version of the albums Taylor releases) will count toward original album sales. So really rankings are heavily influenced by the purchasing power of the fans because one person can buy the same album a bunch of different times, when rly they’re buying merch or the subsequent add-ons to the og album
What does capitalism have to do with quality of music? If anything shouldn’t the artists who make the best (meaning more people enjoy it) music make the most money because capitalism in its purest form is a meritocracy? I’m not a Taylor Swift fan btw, actually actively dislike her music but this comment makes no sense
I don’t think we listened to the same some…because it’s not supposed to be ABOUT the actual fate of Ophelia, it’s referencing how finding love and them building a life together “saved her” from facing the same fate as Ophelia. It’s not the same repeat story of another boyfriend who either breaks her heart or doesn’t want to take the next step of commitment. That’s the point. It’s a metaphor, not the actual plot or focus of the song.
I will clarify I never listened to the song, many friends of mine who did told me this though. I will admit I do like some of her music, but years ago in hs I had a few swifty teachers blasted many of her songs daily on repeat at a painfully loud volume all class for the whole school year ruining most of her music for me
theres also multiple videos of her explaining what each song is supposed to be about. if you look up her interview on fallon, she talks about every song. and also, if you watched tloas movie, she goes into depth about each song in way more detail too. anyways there are a lot of interviews where she talks about her songs so go look them up.
What I’m saying is that the supposed meritocracy doesn’t actually produce the best music. Taylor Swift is certainly not the most talented musician in the world releasing the greatest music of all time, but the meritocracy would lead you to believe that. You can thank capitalism for causing Taylor Swift to release the most uninspired music ever.
People who make an artist their entire personality and shove them in everyone’s face do indeed ruin the vibes. I’d say the hate that comes for most artists, Taylor especially, stems from the same kind of thing of being forced to over-consume their art/music. It’s like how a lot of people in adulthood can’t stand food that was a staple of their childhood b/c they had it SO much they now get sick at the thought of it. You can’t force someone to like anything by shoving it down their throats!
But we also have to be vigilant in forming our own opinions and understandings of things separately to what others think and feel. Otherwise it just turns the hate from being a byproduct of overconsumption to being formed by ignorance and a lack of true facts or understanding. I love Taylor Swift’s music! I have 3 different playlists dedicated to different categories within her discography. But I can’t stand the people who don’t let anyone else breathe and enjoy other things more than or
instead of her music. We’re all allowed to have our own opinions, but nothing changes if we don’t respect that other people can also be right. Life is situational. That includes when it comes to matters of taste. Blatant hate without true attempt at understanding isn’t a winning move tho! And that goes for people criticizing those who aren’t fans as much as it goes for those who haven’t tried actually listening to the lyrics of some of her songs. (I’m not even a fan of all of them either tbh!)
I didn’t even know it was about charli until I read abt it cause I’m not a part of the Taylor swift lore I just listed to the one with Sabrina and by default decided to listen to the rest of them. So fair that she should have done more burlesque jazz if that was what she was going for cause the composition of the songs were quite musically flat. They weren’t bad songs though imo
