because he was crazy, basically. people with psychotic/schizophrenic tendencies can attach meaning to things in ways that don't make sense to anyone else.

He was just insane. He felt he resonated with the main character, but he failed in acting like him. It motivated him not because of the message of the book but because of what he saw in it
