What we need is for prisoners to sit in their beds all day twiddling their thumbs or out at recess in the yard. What we do not need is them producing any sort of value for their prisons or society. It’s okay to lock someone in a room for the rest of their life on the taxpayers dime. It’s not okay to assign that same person work, that’s just wrong. Wtf did prisoners ever do to deserve that?
True, but apart from that… why do we necessarily HAVE to have prison labor…our prisons produce billions of dollars worth of goods through prison labor… but like is it really necessary to force those people to engage in that labor??? I know we’re talking about criminals, but it feels icky because of our country’s mass incarceration, police brutality, and bigotry issues…
No, but I was talking about the 13th Amendment was implemented to abolish slavery—with the added BUT of unless they were imprisoned. I mentioned what happened after we implemented the 13th amendment: people being arrested for vagrancy and loitering. These weren’t criminal offenses before the 13th amendment, they made them criminal offenses so that racist cops could put black people in jail and prisons. Nowhere in that statement did I imply that only black people go to jail or prisons.
