I remember the gym teacher was weirdly misogynistic (even as a woman herself) and treated the girls as weaker. She even made a fuss about my friend (F) brining a pink baseball glove one day and wouldn’t let her play because of it. She also would not take the girl’s injuries seriously. Just really weird. I don’t think she works there anymore though thankfully.
girls weren’t allowed to wear tank tops/cut offs because the boys would “get distracted” which a vice principal literally told me in fourth grade when i wore a diy cut up tshirt for field day(meanwhile all the boys are wearing the exact same types of shirts with the cut of sleeves) but her problem was that mine was “only two and a half fingers wide, not three” i tried to make sure it was three when i cut it but she had fatter fingers than me and was also a huge bitch. anyway hope this helps!
we were all in uniforms and the girls HAD to wear dresses or skirts to stay “modest” despite the fact that the school girl skirts are arguably a very sexualized piece of clothing. i even brought this up once and got lectured on why modesty is import to protect our brothers in christ. my question was never answered. why they made girls wear skirts and dresses to “protect” the boys’ learning environment is beyond me.
i also played field hockey and we were not allowed to practice in pennies and sports bras bc it was “distracting” and immodest but the football guys were allowed to run around without shirts on. the whole team got lectured on it. we also were not allowed to change a penny to a different color on the field since the men would see our sports bras for the 2 seconds that took. tell me why that double standard existed and why WE got lectured and the boys didn’t.
RETWEET I was a cheerleader and we would wear our uniforms on fridays, my skirt was WAY shorter than any of my shorts. Best part? The admin who was in charge of dress code enforcement and would stand out in the halls for class change to hand slips was the cheer coach… i argued with her and won!
period!!! good on you for winning the battle. im also realizing you asked for elementary school specifically, these weren’t necessarily elementary school, however it was all one big private school K-12 so i don’t know if my experiences specifically for field hockey count. the uniform thing though? definitely.
