pretty standard insecurity for high school relationships that go into college. either talk to him about needing to give you space and if he can control his emotions it's fine, or be prepared to end things soon

Although be careful with using words resembling “I need space” the moment that comes out of your mouth you’re going to set him off into a downward spiral. Talk, discuss, understand one another. Everyone gets doubts and become insecure in their lifetime.
