Because they base their entire personality around it and don’t want to challenge their own world views

yeah it's like an enormous pillar of people's perceptions of the world. Also it's pretty common to think that without a belief in God, someone can't have any system of morality.

when you say that god isn’t real they interpret it as you trying to “debunk” their religion or that you’re trying to provoke them, other times it’s that they feel the need to defend god’s honor. the people who get mad about others not believing in their god (or at least a god) have often been made to associate religion with morality and believing that those who don’t subscribe to (their) religion must be backhanded and/or evil.

Lowkey man as a lifelong atheist, if you continually get bad responses it’s probably not bc of what you’re saying, but how you say it. If your tone implies you think they’re stupid, then yeah, they’re not gonna take it well.

I’m always respectful, I think everyone has the right to believe in what they want. I share my beliefs and it’s like I just said every slur know to man.

Either you’re not as respectful as you think you are- which, no judgement, I’ve been called intimidating before so I understand that it’s it purposeful- or you’re talking exclusively to like, jehovahs witnesses and the Amish.
