Am I the only one who thinks we may not be alive in five years, if not less? I pay a decent amount of attention to geopolitics and it feels like none of the tensions around the world are gonna be fixed until they eventually come to a head (nuclear war)

People have been saying this for the last 40 years and then tensions have actually majorly decreased over that time.

I’m more concerned about climate change than war honestly

We’re already nearing the point of no return if not already there

It’s a problem no doubt but I think we will adapt and it is not existential. I’m no expert on climate change though so correct me if I’m wrong

Imma be honest it is way worse than it has been really since the Cold War. I can explain why if you want

How can we adapt to this planet being destroyed bruh

lol way less weapons since then and the media makes it appear way worse than it is. Don’t live in fear. Live wild and free. Let peace and love reign.

Because the planet is not being destroyed literally. I don’t wanna seem like I’m dismissing it as a hoax or non-issue, I know it is affecting certain areas of the world very harshly and may destroy many habitats and cause extinction of many species. But I don’t think it will cause billions of deaths anytime soon the way a nuclear war would

You are very wrong I study earth science and the truth is very depressing to learn about

Strongly suggest taking a class on climate change and climate systems in college

The amount of weapons we have now is still enough to do unthinkable damage. And I don’t get this opinion from fear mongering media, I am observing what is happening and making a guess based on my gut feeling. I obviously hope I’m wrong

Can you tell me why I’m wrong then? At least give me the most important things to know

Well, how do you expect us to adapt, just keep using air conditioning to make our buildings colder while temperatures keep rising outdoors? Or do you think we will evolve to withstand extreme heat in the very short amount of time that temperatures are rising drastically on a geological timescale

We can’t rely on AC to keep us cool long term because most of our energy comes from fossil fuels, and increasing energy demands means more carbon emissions from burning FFs. This is one of the reasons why AI data centers are so destructive to the environment There is not enough investment in carbon neutral energy and won’t be any time soon, FFs make politicians too much money to give up

We also can’t biologically evolve fast enough to withstand the kinds of temperatures we’re reaching, the only option we have is to keep using energy to keep ourselves cool short term. Even a few degrees can make or break an entire species ability to live, with climate change there are many species going extinct due to heat as well as habitat changes and food chain disruption, something humans will deal with too

Again, I agree that it is very bad. I just don’t believe it is nearly as drastic nor as immediate of a threat as a world war

It’s more drastic than a world war because it affects every living being on the planet and even the ground we walk on

So would a nuclear war

A nuclear war would speed up the process of climate change

Again I very strongly suggest seeking out a class on climate and climate change at a college, I think everyone should have to take at least one, the amount of people who don’t understand how serious of a threat climate change is is concerning

Then you’d understand we can’t really adapt to climate change in a way that will actually solve the issue, at least with the current political climate

Yes but you’re ignoring my main point. Maybe it would be better if we just agree to disagree on which is more existential

Are you trying to say that climate change wouldn’t matter if a war would destroy the planet anyways?
