Nah, you should be able to invite who you want. But that they were let down by it shows that they are more invested in the friendship than you are and you should communicate that to them. They probably have no idea you’re feeling that way about them so they’re sad and confused. They’re already sad so just tell them straight up, then at least they won’t be confused anymore.
