In need of advice regarding the euthanasia of my cat. I found her as a stray about a week ago and have been rehabilitating her. However I’ve just gotten results back that she has stage 4 cancer. More details in comments

The vet basically gave me the options to a) euthanize her asap so she’s not in pain any longer or b) keep her comfortable and happy until she can’t keep going

As of today, I’ve had her for 5 days and she is still eating drinking and using the litter box. She is not wanting to sleep much (this might be due to the pin killers tho) and is scared of people so I’ve got her in her own little kitty corner

I completely understand the stress of this. If you decide to put her out of her misery, many vets do “good samaratian” euthanasias it doesn't cost anything but you don't get anything special just their body in a little box. Sending you hugs❤️❤️

Right now she’s malnourished and extremely scared. So part of me wants to feed her and give her time to warm up and relax so her last few weeks were comfortable and relaxing.Whereas if I put her down now, she is terrified and hurting

Howeve I also don’t want to drag out her pain and take the risk that maybe she just won’t open up or relax and now I’ve given her several extra weeks of being terrified

I just don’t know what’s “right” and I’m really geiriving and want to make the choice that allows her the most comfort

If she doesn’t seem like she’s in pain I don’t see an issue with keeping her around. The day she starts seeming like she’s very sad/hurting is the day you reconsider- but for now you can try to love the illness out of her🫶 give the baby some love for me

it’s really hard but if you think she’s suffering it’s part of patient ethics. you have to recognize where she’s at and ask yourself if it’s supporting life or prolonging death

Its scary to put them down and not wanting them to have terrible final moments, maybe crush up a benadryl or a pain pill before it happens so she feels good

For now she’s been eating/drinking and showing signs she wants to keep going. So for now I’m focused on pain management and letting her get as comfortable and relaxed as possible until she tells me she doesn’t want to keep going.

this is the way to do it. don't put to sleep until she doesnt have quality of life (stops eating and drinking for like 3 days) or has multiple seizures
