Do companies really need thousands of accountants? Like is each accountant adding $80,000 of value?

You would be surprised my friend. When each accountant is responsible for a department handling 1 million+ dollars or more it’s worth it to make sure it’s balancing properly.

Employees are the biggest expense a company has.

Depending on the size of the company, yes - multiple accountants are absolutely needed. Accountants don’t “add value” per se, but they “maintain value” by making sure the money is going to, and coming from, the right places at the right time.

Even at a million dollars, paying a ~10% fee for someone to look at the books, file invoices, etc. sounds a bit excessive.
