What do ppl always talk about about how catholic priests molest children while statistically other occupations are way more likely to do so such as teachers?

Because it’s an ideological attack. Some people don’t like Catholicism and think it’s an easy thing to hammer. Some people are just going along with the narrative and don’t know any better.

Because two wrongs don’t make a right. That teachers ALSO molest children or at higher rate than priests doesn’t magically condone or make ok that priests do so as well. It’s still despicable that priests molest children. Also, while teachers are supposed to be held at high standards, priests are held at an even higher one making any crime they commit even more sickening than any regular civilian committing it. But to sum up it’s because other people doing it doesn’t make it ok for them to do it

Priests have a bigger safety net to do and get away with the heinous shit, even if not as common with them as with, say, teachers or coaches. Many retain their positions, the church pays for all their fines and to bail them out, they continually defend them and blame the victims, etc.

Theres actually a complicated history between Catholics and the Wesern world. This was just one of many PR tactics to dismantle the Christian faith in the west.

It’s more because it was covered up by the church and the priests got away with it. Teachers who commit those crimes don’t tend to get away with it. But two wrongs don’t make a right.

So you advocate for propagating a blatant lie? Wild take brother, wild take.

It’s really not a lie. Sure, other professions may have more known instances, but the religious systems in place give priests and youth pastors and every other clergy position free reign to do so, get bail paid for, ‘job security’, and unquestioned support when things *aren’t* just swept under the rug and ignored by everyone in the church.

But none of that is true. The church has had scandals in the past, as has any institution of about 1 billion people, but on the whole it has been cleared up. Apologies and settlement have been made, those involved were punished (not burned at the stake because we don’t do that anymore but still.). And systems were put in place to avoid that happening again.

I would turn the criticism around, there is much more demonstrable sex abuse in the LGBTQ+ community than there ever was in the clergy. Should we dismantle the whole thing because less than one in a hundred of them is a sexual offender?

Of course not. Any large community is going to have evil people within it, period end of story. What we need to look at is how those people and failures are handled. The church has handled these problems well by any measure and taken proactive steps to avoid it happening in the future.

Except you know that’s not true, the Queer community does not have as much sexual abuse as does the church. We also make sure problematic individuals are alienated and held accountable whenever possible. The church does not. They actively hide reports, bail out problematic clergy, and keep people in problematic positions. Quit trying to defend that bullshit, it just makes you look like you’re part of it.

Those problems still have not been rectified. Apologies and monetary settlements do not work to prevent future abuse. I’m done engaging with your pedophile defence bullshit. Fuck you.
