What version of the Bible is the most commonly used? I’m studying it for literary purposes, after having read the Quran. I know there are slight variations depending on which version is used. (I am agnostic and this is simply a pleasure project)

Catholics tend to use RSVCE or the like, there is a list on the USCCB website. I can’t speak for Protestants, though King James is popular. Though there are some anachronistic translations in King James it’s fairly good. However, be aware that Catholic and Orthodox versions have several books which Protestant versions don’t. So if you want a version which includes them all get one which includes the controversial books.

I have been told the NASB is the most accurate translation in terms of the original texts, but the NLT is probably the easiest to read. They make parallel bibles with multiple translations, as well

As to your question “most commonly used.” I can’t say for sure, as it depends on the branch of Christianity and if they have an official translation.

Thank you! Genuinely asking because I didn’t grow up religious and am diving into religious texts as a passion project of sorts.

One thing I would recommend is reading with a guide or study Bible. The Bible is not an easy text to understand at first glance and contains many kinds of writings, from history to philosophy to poetry and law. Bible literally means library after all. So it’s easy to read a verse and not understand what it means if you don’t understand the context.

Most of the “The Bible says do X horrible thing!” Criticism comes from people not understanding the context of specific verses or events. It’s important to have some way to understand the context of what you’re reading.
