How did the Soviet Union just fall apart without a (very) bloody revolution? And who was guarding the nuclear weapons throughout that transition. Such a strange part of the 20th century. Somewhat miraculous arguably.

That this big scary entity that America was all frightened to the core over for decades after WWII just suddenly imploded from the inside without much prodding from the west and still managed to restructure itself into a dictatorship afterwards. That part kind of sucks. I really don’t know enough about Russia’s history

It's scary you don't think a bloody revolution didn't happen

Their economy was weak and people (especially in Berlin) were desperate to get out. To alleviate, Mikhail Gorbachev implemented Glasnost and Perestroika, which were ‘compromises’ with western culture. This gave people a taste of how they could be living, and it ended up with the Berlin Wall coming down. I may be wrong about some of this, it’s been a while since I’ve been in a history class

It’s an interesting question. The Soviet Union itself largely collapsed because it just ran out of runway, they didn’t have enough money, resources or political will to keep the thing going. The west was significantly more economically advanced and was using that gap as a means to put pressure on the Soviets.

How did the previous comments suddenly disappear and get replaced by something else. So bizarre how this app behaves sometimes. Also, how is that a bloody revolution bud, that’s just a very basic summary of what happened with a few Russian buzz words thrown in that you feel proud about remembering

If you’re locked in an arms race with someone and they start building F-15s and nuclear submarines, you need to do the same. But because their economy was a communist basket case they simply couldn’t afford it. They had to keep this huge military base to maintain their position as the top of the communist world, but just couldn’t afford it.

Add to that the fact that their civilian industrial base was horribly inefficient and in many cases extremely outdated. But because it’s a centrally planned economy they needed to come up with the money and resources needed to upgrade it.

So you have no money, but to make money you need to produce things efficiently, but to do that you need to spend money on your infrastructure and industry, but to do that you need money and you have no money.

As Thatcher said “Socialism/communism works great until you run out of other peoples money to spend.” So the economy collapsed, this caused people to become increasingly disenchanted with the whole idea of the Soviet Union, and want to go their own way. The government saw that and had a choice, send in the tanks like they had before, or let the system collapse. And they didn’t have the money, the will or the political backing to send in the tanks.

As to who was guarding the nukes…. Most of the time it was the same people who had been guarding them before, the government in Russia didn’t cease to exist, it simply radically changed form, but basic things like guarding nukes were still being done. HOWEVER, not every nuke was well guarded and some were supposedly… lost for a time. Though they have been since recovered.
