dictators suppress any groups that provide people a way to organize and share their thoughts. churches are just one kind of organization like that

often not. universities are either taken over by the dictator's political allies or shut down entirely with exceptions made for party loyalists. political organizations besides the part in power are similarly suppressed. all collective action is oriented towards the dictatorship. that's how it works.
