some people are photogenic, some aren’t. people have told me I look fine irl, but I find myself to be hideous in photos

If people are telling you that often then I imagine it must be true, Maybe you just aren’t your own type so it’s hard to tell Plus you see yourself so often that you’re used to your appearance
