NO ONE is “self made.” Everyone got help, mentorship, or support from someone else to get where they are. The question is are you too cocky to admit it instead of being humble enough to acknowledge it?

Self made just means you didn’t inherit your wealth/success, you created it, doesn’t mean you did every single thing on your absolute own

I am self made and also humble. I know it doesn’t happen often but I’m proof it’s possible.

being self made is accomplished by making your own effort to achieve a certain status, without any inheritance, using your own willpower and ideas to elevate yourself. working with others does not disqualify you from being self made.

You can be self made by BUILDING those connections by yourself

So no one gave you advice, took a chance on helping you, had a YouTube channel or article you learned from, was willing to loan you their money, time or supplies; offered you a scholarship, equipment, or anything else you needed to get where you are? Not everyone gets the same amount of support. You may have definitely done a lot or most of it on your own. But to be entirely self made implies you existed in a void without other people.

I understand and see your point, you’re absolutely right. And no, it’s not me wanting a “Woe is me”, I’m sure there are others who weren’t as lucky as me. Again, I have everything because I stood up for me. I’ve made many mistakes and also made many good decisions along the way, I regret nothing.

I’m glad you don’t! And I don’t want you to see me saying that as taking away all the hard work you did to get there cause it doesn’t!

Not at all, you’re good. You have a point.

Based on that logic wouldn’t anyone with a substantive financial inheritance be “self made” then?

Interesting take, though I don’t think it covers all the things that lead up to those connections being built. I know people who have been successful entrepreneurs, but doubt they’d say they’re “self made” because of the support, encouragement, and coincidences that helped them along the way. That said, doing the work to build connections is still an important thing someone should be proud of managing!

I said this in another reply but based on that wouldn’t anyone who doesn’t have a substantial financial inheritance be “self made” then? Feels a bit too broad and possibly dismissive of all the direct and indirect forms of support you had along the way.

(assuming you meant a substantial inheritance then,) no. if you’re referring to a large amount of wealth, that is. unless, that person who received the large amount of inherited wealth didn’t use it to get to their achieved status.

Yep meant substantial! Damn autocorrect… right so if we’re excluding people who inherited a large amount of wealth, wouldn’t anyone who didn’t receive that kind of inheritance technically be “self made” then? So like the majority of people would be?

Hmm, depends on what self made would be considered in that context! Could definitely be most people.

Ah now THAT’S a really interesting take on phrase I hadn’t considered. I’d still think being aware of the help/support you got would be important but I wouldn’t be as put off by people saying it then.

Yeah, being aware of all the support you get from others is definitely key! Even for people who could be labeled as self made.
