So to put it as short as I can, I have a friend group of 4 (or 6) and we room together. Recently one of my friends, Tulip jokingly told another friend, Daisy, that they need therapy, which Daisy started screaming out and saying that they didn’t and technically made it a whole scene in the living area. I happen to be there and in the living room at the time, Tulip telling Daisy that they were just joking, but Tulip taking it seriously and saying that therapy is for mental people. (1)
As a therapy goer myself, I kind of took it a certain way, but instead of insulting I just told them that “therapy is not for people who are unstable, but sometimes it is good to talk to someone”, but instead they still argued that they believe that it is something serious to accuse them of needing to go to therapy. I ended up leaving the room, not out of frustration, but because I was in the middle of going to the gym. After that, while at the gym I decided to finally speak about the comment(2)
And the way that Daisy reacted to the comment about therapy, stating to them that I did not feel comfortable about how they link therapy to people who are mental, especially as someone who is going to therapy to better my health and is pretty private about it because I hate the thought that someone would think of me as some crazy person at the mention of it. This was sent to a group chat with the roommates, which they did not reply for hours. (3)
Finally, later at night when hanging out with a friend, Daisy replied with comments that I pissed them off because I thought of myself in that situation, and even said that if they were me I wouldn’t have even made that comment. Instead of feeling sympathetic, it felt like daggers for even FINALLy speaking up about the insensitive comments and mannerisms that they make about mental health and making me feel like what I had to say was stupid and selfish.
After that entire spill, all of the friends went back to chatting like nothing happened; no real apology, not even a mention if I was okay, nothing. I felt so unheard and made me start to think I did something wrong about feeling hurt about a comment. Morning after, Tulip sent me a long text about the entire situation apologizing FOR Daisy behavior and making up excuses for them, which I kept telling them that it is not their fault because it’s not them that are in the wrong, it was Daisy.
I felt like I was getting nowhere with the texts so I just ended up giving up, which sadly made Tulip feel upset, as they were the one that wanted to bring us back together. I felt like they chose Daisy’s feelings over my own, even though I am the one going through the process of becoming mentally better for myself. At the end of the day, I made the decision to cut things off with them, as this was not the first time a situation like this between me and Daisy happened, but now I just feel alone.
