A moment if there's no microchip, give it a bit to see if anyone's looking for a lost dog. While I believe that pets need to be microchiped, I don't think it's right to just take someone's dog. All I think is if she has no microchip, we should wait for anyone to come forward. I especially think we should wait because she is super social and friendly. I know many dogs can be social for so many reasons but it gives me more of a reason to hesitate.

Strictly on behalf of the dog, you’re potentially the AH. I used to volunteer at my county’s animal shelter (Orlando) so I can assure you there are well established protocols and waiting periods in place expressly to help reunite an animal with its owner. I can also assure you that there are some absolute $h!+ people who abuse, neglect and abandon their pets. All that said, any shelter (and most vet clinics) can scan an animal for a chip.

NTA, you’re not just saving the dog’s potential owner from the heartbreak of finding out she’s been rehomed, you’re also saving your parents from the heartbreak of finding out the dog the adopted belongs to someone else

That's what I want them to do. The guy who found the dog can't take care of her for too long and the shelters around here are full. Plus we live near the same neighborhood so we can easily be available if she has an owner.

Even if a shelter is at capacity, they will still do a chip scan and input the animal in their system in case the owner calls or visits looking for their pet. So, either your parents or the coworkers should 100% take the dog to get scanned for a chip, but in the mean time, where tf do you propose the dog go? Back on the streets? Let your parents show love and compassion to a lost dog while waiting. Again, strictly on behalf of the dog, what’s the harm if your parents do get attached?

And then the owner is found? Yes your parents might be sad but they’ll get over it, right? Think of how much better it will be for the dog (who btw is 💯 also sad and traumatized by being lost) to be well cared for and loved during this time? Mild YTAH on behalf of the dog Also curious how old you are? If you’re old enough, then do the right thing yourself and take the dog to get checked for a chip otherwise mind your business. Not your place to tell your parents what to do.

Maybe they just haven’t said much to you in an effort to prevent YOU from getting attached. That’s exactly what I would do as a parent to help protect not only the animal but also my child.
