NTA, it sounds like he is thinking of it in terms of monomial cost over actual cost. You earned the rewards by using the credit card, and are using what you earned on the trip. It’s not like you’ll be able to spend the points again for a different trip. Technically you already spent the money. It’s like if your boss gave you a bonus and you used that instead of taking it directly out of your normal pay check.
