Tell the apartment manager that you have an ESA and that your roommate is allergic. Let him sort it out for you! You provide your documentation for your ESA. Per the law about ESA, landlords have to make “reasonable accommodation” to fit you and your ESA. Such as switching your roommate or giving you a single b
Depression spells and having her there brings me a lot of comfort. She has stopped me from self harming multiple times. I have just been informal that the apartment has put me with a random roommate that is allergic to cats badly. The apartment is lofted, I’m on the second story and she on the 1st. I regularly wipe down my cat and brush her to deal with dander. I’m going to be bring quality air filters. My room is bigger than my dorm so I don’t think the cat minds being in a smaller space.
As someone who’s extremely allergic to cats, I see your view but I can also understand for your roommate. I lived in a house and I lived on the top floor, while my roommate lived on the bottom with her cat. My allergies are very bad that I couldn’t even sit in our own living room without breaking into hives/ eyes swelling up within 30 minutes. HOWEVER, my roommate did nothing to help prevent this. I was only upset because I paid the same amount of money as the other 5 of my roommates
And couldn’t even enjoy my own living room. It was just one of those things where he’d let his cat go everywhere in the house without helping to prevent dander. As a roommates pov, i’d either ask to be switched, or have you move just because of that. I don’t think you’re an ass for bringing your ESA, but I definitely think someone possibly switching would help future arguments if nothing you’re planning to do (cleaning dander, air qualifiers, etc) works. But as someone who’s extremely allergic
I would appreciate you even just for trying to help. Possibly keeping the cat in your room, and room only can also probably help a ton! My roommate just didn’t give a shit. The cat would even walk on our counters and kitchen table and he just didn’t care. Thankfully I graduated and will never have to see him again.
