I can’t be the asshole for telling my fiancé to call the cops and file a complaint and report on our neighbor. Multiple instances of our mail being delivered to her home instead of ours, multiple instances of being met with open mail when she brings it.

Doesnt matter what intentions were it’s illegal for them to be opening your mail with your name on it. Who knows what they haven’t returned to you.

did you talk to your neighbor first? and maybe try to figure out why all your mail keeps getting delivered there?

yeah but the legal consequences for something like this could be life ruining all over opened mail that was returned. i would still at least talk to the neighbor before calling the police to see if we can resolve it some other way

Nah people do this on purpose to steal information or money coming through the mail, there’s no valid reason to be doing this in the first place.

your neighbor is probably not stealing information or money coming through the mail. it’s much more likely they’re just not looking at the name on the envelope and just opening stuff that shows up at their door. they’re not stealing the mail and opening it it’s getting miss delivered. either way you don’t really know until you talk to them and then you can decide if the police need to get involved and if you need to contact like your bank about potential fraud

Unless you’re the neighbor you cannot definitively say nothing has been stolen. If the neighbor knows this is a common instance and does not return the mail unopened they are doing it on purpose. OP is NTA and feels it should be reported and they are correct. We do not live in a rose tinted world and cannot assume the best of everyone. I agree it needs to be addressed with the post office but the neighbor knows what they’re doing by this point.

no but you can literally fucking talk to them for 5 minutes to sus out what’s happening before you call the violent life ruining goon squad to handle it for you. especially since you now have to deal with the police which is a pain in the ass even if you’re the one reporting something. because sadly we don’t like in a world where things are simple and straightforward and the police magically fix all your problems

Filing a report isn’t going to bring the damn SWAT team in bruh, it’s starting a paper trail of complaints which it sounds like has been put off long enough already with this happening multiple times.

I can add more context, we have already spoken to her about it. It’s one thing to bring back the mail as it was but she is opening it. I blame our carrier 70% and her 30%. I have already complained to our local USPS and the carrier he is an older man so I genuinely believe he is struggling with the numbers because the week after I complained. They replaced him with someone new on the route and for the two weeks he was gone no switched up mail. Once he’s back, one or two mail switched up again.

We tried to handle this no cops spoke to her and USPS solved for those two weeks but now it’s back to her opening it then bringing it to us. If she comes with open mail, I’m open hand smacking her it’s a federal offense opening up someone else’s mail and yes she has opened up personal information. If she does it again I’m just gonna hit her and file a report. One of them should knock sense into her or USPS needs to retire our carrier.

ok cool i just wanted to know if yall talked to her first. go ahead with the cops. definitely do not assault her if you’re getting the cops involved they don’t care if it’s deserved she can still press charges for aggravated assault and you don’t want this to be messier than it has to be since legal battles are hard
