Someone who knew it was my birthday, and I considered one of my best friends, didn't wish me a happy birthday. He even saw my Instagram story. I'm pretty conflicted. We were undergrad friends (now freshly postgrad). Do I drop him? He's bipolar type 2

Dropping a friend just for not wishing you a happy birthday is a bit much. Life changes post grad, just because someone doesn’t reach out doesn’t mean they don’t care about you anymore. Give them some grace and try reaching out another time, you never know if someone is having a rough day or is just busy.

As someone with hormonal imbalances due to endocrine issues: I find myself scrolling through peoples stories while disassociating. There’s been times where my friend will ask me in person about something they posted, knowing I viewed it, and I still have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s a nice spaced out lazy eyed scroll. while I can’t speak for him, I can say that social media is not a primary form of communication especially when it’s just viewing your story.

I wouldn’t. People get busy, miss text messages, forget, and sometimes accidents happen. I don’t stay as much in touch with many of my undergrad friends as before. But they don’t hold it against me when I don’t respond and I don’t hold it against them. One of them, we’ll randomly text every few months and I may not get a response to said text for 2 months.

I think the major issue with him is that he also hasn’t responded to my text asking how he is that I also sent a few weeks ago. He comes and goes a lot when he goes through manic and depressive episodes, and I’ve been patient for a few years. But he’s almost acting passive aggressive and I don’t know if it’s a personal issue or something with me.

If it’s one of your best friends, have a conversation. But like one of mine gets that I got a lot of crap going on in my life. Sometimes it’s easier to not text and me going silent is not an insult but just me dealing and she knows that. I truly value that in her friendship and I think it makes ours stronger because it goes both ways.

It definitely hurts but at the same time, I don’t think it’s worth dropping them over

I also find myself in loops of self isolation, doubt, confusion and anxiety over my own life. If I can’t manage my own health, I can’t manage anyone else’s. Yes he should communicate, yes most things could be cleared in simple and short replies- but that’s much easier said than done when it feel like your body, mind, and ability to function are all working against eachother.
