Unfortunately, YATA, though I don’t think a big one. There are lots of reasons people elect to get cosmetic surgery, and given the importance of appearance in Western culture (though not western culture alone) there is a great deal of social pressure. While some may be motivated by pure self centredness, it’s not an assumption one can make.

i’m not a fan of it myself but i don’t see how it would be self centered if the person is insecure. if it makes them happy, so be it. i don’t think we should judge someone for what they do with their money and time.

I mean, there’s definitely situations where it happens because of bullying or whatever, like my mom had a nose job becayse she was so insecure, but I do think it boils down to a serious systemic issue of appearance being tied to value

I think people invest in what they care about and if they have the money and having a different nose makes them feel good about themselves I don’t think it’s anyone’s business to judge especially when you’re not the one putting money in.

I think we have different definitions of “purely cosmetic” or I do just think you’re TA, ya. My bf had scar revision as an adult after having open heart surgery at 9 years old. It was always something he was really self conscious about. He didn’t *need* it but he did, you know?

I mean its different for everyone. Someone could be everyone-else-centered, or self centered or just in between

You’re TA. Technically getting top surgery for gynecomastia or gender dysphoria is also purely cosmetic but it’s also life saving
