Why is the far right obsessed with “tough love”? My conservative relatives and conservative friends love to throw that term around

As someone who grew up with hard right relatives it’s not meant in a negative way. The reality of the world is it is rough and life doesn’t give you second chances often. So tough love is their way of trying to “prepare” you for the real world. And while I agree that to some level, I think sometimes people get carried away and then the line gets blurry 😬

Because they love trying to justify abuse however they can.

Some of these replies are unhinged. If your drug addicted son asks for more money for the third time, what do you say? “Sure thing sweetie btw I think you should stop doing drugs.” Hell nah you tell him fuck no and get him the help he needs

No it means doing things for someone that has to be done even if the person doesn’t like it. It’s like forcing a frog addicted get help instead of enabling them. It’s doing the best for someone even if they don’t like it, giving them what they need not necessarily what they want

The way kkkuntservatives use it is to justify abuse. Sensory deprivation, physical abuse, establishing unhealthy relationships with food, the list goes on.

Tough love is a broad term and doesn’t always apply to addictions. It can be a general parental style of being strict, limiting praise, being highly critical and demanding. Someone with a general stern and authoritative personality
