The way women are portrayed in anime most of the time is diabolical. Major turnoff for me for the genre.

Anime isn’t a genre. It has many genres in it and ur probably only watching the ones that are meant for teenage boys. Like shojo are and Joseis demographic is teenage girls/adult women where women are portrayed well b/c it is meant for women.

Genre? Do you mean medium?? Furthermore, if you want to get into anime but have a problem with female representation maybe there's a list of good representation online you could find? I'm sure there's blogs that cover those

Depends on the genre. Joseis portray them much better than shounens

It’s not like it’s any better in American comics meant for teenage boys either lol

Why is it okay though for women to be portrayed like shit because it’s “meant for teenage boys” ?

I never said it was ok. Some shonen actually portray women well. Shonen is the demographic for teenage boys. I was just letting u know the different anime demographics to have you to watch some anime and not give up on it. U should be asking what are some anime with well written women

JJK leans the other way and sexualizes men. So many of my friends simp over them

I’d have to argue that the men in JJK are not sexualized or very minimally so. Just because lots of people simp over a character does not inherently mean they are “sexualized” in the source media. Is Gojo pretty? Absolutely. But is that portrayed in a sexual manner? I’d say no. Goofy if anything.

I was obviously talking about the anime which deviates from the manga (source material) from time to time. Take for instance, Choso lifting his shirt in the bathroom to show his blood hardening technique. A lot of scenes with Toji too. If we're not strictly speaking of physical features, then there's Nanami. You could maybe argue it was the female fanbase which sexualized him or that he appealed to the feminine gaze rather than the idea of what the feminine gaze should be by men.

I can totally agree that the anime added/embellished some scenes to be a bit more fan-service-esque, but I’d still have to argue that it’s relatively tame! Especially when compared to fan service of female characters in other series from the same genre or demographic. Like you mentioned, JJK exhibits some great examples of the “female gaze”, which is completely different from the male gaze. We see some abs on occasion, sure, but never are any of these men objectified or reduced to eye candy.

And despite Gege being a known FREAK, I can appreciate him for not even sexualizing underage characters. Any of the characters you could argue are even remotely “sexualized” in JJK are grown ass men, so frankly idgaf if people get their freak on over Gojo or Nanami, lol. I know that’s not what you’re saying, but I see soooo many people, particularly male fans forgetting this aspect when they criticize female jjk fans. 😭 saw a guy saying Gojo fans are worse than grown men into loli… sir.

I fully agree that tons of other anime series have gone to far greater lengths to sexualize women, often minors (yuck), to a very problematic degree. I'm just saying that the JJK anime tends to be more fan-service-y in their representation of men. Definitely not to the same degree, but it happens. They are objectified to some degree.

Ewwwww. People, both men and women and non-binary, who are into lolis are fucking weirdos (unless you're an actual child yourself, but I don't children watching anime develop crushes or infatuation with these characters).

I guess I’m just not seeing where they’re being objectified? Bc I think otherwise we mostly agree. Maybe I’m blind lol, but I’d genuinely love if you could give me some examples of that! :D Even in the scenes you shared above they still feel like important, well written characters more so than objects of desire. As in if you took them out there, there would be a gaping hole in the story. Their actions, emotions, and feelings are tangible and important.

Oh my gosh I confused BL with yaoi and I almost told someone that “The summer Hikaru died” was more yaoi leaning than straight learning 💀. Thank goodness I looked it up before I said yaoi

But I essentially said what 3 said. BL is normal gay romance while yaoi is a hentai term. Kinda like how GL is normal lesbian romance while yuri is a hentai term

I thought that they were equivalent. Like if you described an anime as yuri that it would be GL. Is it like an "all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares" situation?

😭it’s not the same I promise. If someone recommends a Bl im not gonna expect smut but if someone recommends a yoai definitely smut. Describing it correctly is good.

This is why I’m so happy I didn’t tell that guy that Hikaru was a yaoi. Like, if you go on those hentai websites and look at the tabs then they are yaoi/yuri not BL/GL.
