Yes exactly. And I wish people weren’t so reductive about Endeavor’s arc. Horikoshi’s point with writing him wasn’t “abusers = good,” it’s that society can applaud and accept someone as an “objectively good person,” but that same person can be a monster behind closed doors. Because yes, it’s a fact that he saved lives and did good, but what about his own family’s lives who he made a living hell?
The level and deapth the series goes into shoto’s relationship with endeavor where it barely touches on his mom is kinda heartbreaking. I still don’t understand how he has such a good relationship with her, when she basically tried to hurt him, and how he has such a piss poor relationship with endeavor. After we’ve come full circle on the story, not sure it 100% makes sense.
It’s because Shoto knows his mom only hurt him because of the trauma Endeavor put her through. Of course Rei loves Shoto and Shoto loves her, but after being physically and mentally abused by her husband for years, she had a moment of weakness and lashed out at Shoto. This was definitely wrong of her, but we see that she immediately regretted it as soon as she did it. The entire family’s dynamic is messy and nuanced, and that’s why Shoto still has a relationship with her despite hating Endeavor.
