you got anything with the same vibe as dungeon meshi, witch hat atelier, yona of the dawn, and frieren? i started in 2022 and almost everything i’ve seen or read has been mid 2010s or later so i’m def missing a lot

Dungeon Meshi is definitely in a class all its own, however some alternate threads to chase are as follows: Last Exile (Kid Airship Couriers get involved in messy political war) Mushishi (very chill, etherial traveling mystic fixes rural occult-ish problems), Spice and Wolf (action adventure, merchant travels with ancient god of the harvest and teaches her economics)

It was so wild and surreal I’m super focused every show I watch and even I felt like I was struggling to follow along but I loved it because of that reason

Can’t say I’ve seen a TON of BL, I’m pretty sure I’m the person who just recommended love stage!! to you, but if you’re looking for others, I’ve heard really good things about mignon.

Definitely should check out the original trigun series from the 90’s. It’s old school cool, with some steampunk sci-fi, and some mystery thrown in. Some other options include: Psycho pass (more gritty mystery action thriller), cowboy bebop (it’s a classic), or FLCL (if your looking for a series that makes no sense until it’s explained to you 😅) let me know if that hits, or if you’re looking for a different vibe.

EVA is a weird one because a lot of it doesn’t make sense until it’s slowed down and explained to you. But it’s wild how much you suddenly get and pick up on when somebody explains what’s going on, what the EVA’s are how the impacts matter, and why everybody is wishing shinji congratulations 😂

Have a few directions we can go. 86 is probably my best direct recommendation. Made in Abyss is another option, edge runners has that descent into darkness piece that I think aligns with the whole beautiful brutal mysterious world. (It’s really dark though 😬)

I'm pulling out something ancient for you. Trinity blood. In a world of vampires and humans, can there be peace between societies? When vampires are the top of the food chain, what hunts vampires?

Couple of options: Toradora is definitely first if you haven’t seen it. Assuming you have, other options include: Carol and Tuesday (music themed drama), Erased (Time travel, murder mystery), and (movie) Paprika (really quirky movie with a fantastic 10/10 soundtrack about mixing dreams and reality)

Check out Kill La Kill, it’s a great story but it’s not a “let’s watch this in public” for some of the ongoing themes of reoccurring nudity (it’s a show based primarily around clothes).

Yeah, if you want something really really dark check out Texhnolyze, or Serial Experiments Lain, can’t say either is quite my cup of tea. Code geass should definitely stay first on your list.

Right on. Bebop and FLCL are a couple more of my favorites so you’re pretty spot on. I’ve been meaning to checkout Trigun, and Psycho pass looks really interesting. Thank you!

These are all a bit light on some more of the comedy side of things you find in the above; despite their beautiful stories. You might also enjoy The World is Still Beautiful, which has some more of those comedy moments. I also recommended Trigun above which has some great comedy in it too despite the serious nature of the story.

Semantic error is also a great manhua, Sasaki to Miyano is super wholesome and one of my favs, and I HIGHLY recommend Heaven‘s Official Blessing and Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, which are both animated but are originally novels (peak content but long if you don’t like reading)
