Dragonball falls flat for me. It's an iconic series and deserves praise, but it lacks stakes and became overly repetitive. Heroes die. Get resurrected and brought back. Villains? A fair amount turn good. Villains powers? Absorb and rapid regen. Solution? Power up or fusion. The world building leaves much to be desired as well
100%, Buu saga is a way better read than it is a watch, that’s for sure. And there’s janky plot holes and inconveniences that drive me insane in it. I still love it though—I love all of Dragon Ball, but man you can really tell that Buu saga was held together by sticks and glue. And like, so was Cell saga, but it miraculously worked really well
True, unfortunately they decided Gohan wasn’t built for the MC spot. I will say the one part of Buu saga I thought was really good was Goku’s characterization. He feels wise and responsible while also still being goofy and unserious. I feel like in Super they just write him to be dumb af when he hasn’t been like that in forever
I think everything you’ve said is true once you get to Z, and if you watch ONLY Z like a lot of people do, but it doesn’t really work against Dragon Ball as a whole because the original lacks a lot of these problems, like I wanna say there’s two resurrections in OG Dragon Ball, and at that point they still had the “you can only get brought back once” rule (I do think getting rid of that rule fucks up the stakes)
If you want a good plot, watch Dragon Ball, if you want hype moments and aura, watch Dragon Ball Z. I personally love both, but for different reasons. I like Dragon Ball because it’s funny, almost every fight has personal stakes instead of world-altering ones, and it’s more of an adventure. I love DBZ because I loved it as a kid and the fights are sick as hell, even if it is a little dumb sometimes
Hard agree. I feel like people don’t feel the stakes in Dragon Ball because 1.) it feels everyone just starts watching at Z and 2.) people’s knowledge of future events dampens the experience for them. For example, Goku dying and deciding to stay dead after Cell saga was a genuine surprise, but people know that the series continues into Buu and Super, so to them it doesn’t feel like it matters. But if you engage with the story on its own terms, it’s a great moment
And on that note, modern Dragon Ball feels like it has no stakes because they keep setting the stories between Buu saga and end of Z, so we know everyone has to be alive and the status quo won’t shift that much. That’s my biggest criticism with the series nowadays. Let’s leave that era behind ffs. Let Goten and Trunks grow up. Let’s actually do something with the characters lol.
Yeah Dragon Ball is the only anime/manga where mfs look you in the eye and say “yeah start half way through, dw about it,” and it’s like… why?? There’s DB arcs better than stuff Z has to offer, it’s not even like early DB is bad or doesn’t matter to the plot—it literally does. Like Z only people are just like “who’s the Red Ribbon army and why do they have beef with Goku?? Eh, whatever.” Like aren’t you curious 💀
