Honestly I think it’s because when an anime gets popular, especially in the West, it gets spammed to hell and back. Like suddenly everything becomes about THAT anime and THOSE characters and they show up everywhere, making it harder to enjoy or be a fan of less known stuff. Also since it’s a cultural import, it isn’t as easy to foster a community for a more niche piece like it is for American cultural pieces like movies or sports teams. Thus, it creates a lot of resentment and frustration.

I have zero qualms with Solo Leveling I just think that Frieren and Dungeon Meshi are better.

I always disliked Solo Leveling, even before it was adapted. I read the manwha. It was just not very good. And, unfortunately, most people dislike popular things because they’re “dumbed down” to be digestible and “not boring” to attract a wide audience. Some people don’t like that.

Like for example I’m a huge Delicious in Dungeon fan and I’d love to buy stuff or talk about it but when I go to my local Japan/Anime stores there’s absolutely nothing from it despite it being moderately popular. What is there is millions of different Demon Slayer, One Piece and Solo Leveling stuff, with people gathering around and talking about it too. That’s what makes it frustrating because I want to sport my Dungeon Meshi pride and talk openly but there’s no opening.
