You can do the typical “what’s your major”typically in first year in college you’re all in gen-Ed’s so your seat partner can literally be a math major while your like a more social sciences major my bsf is a physio while I’m journalism. Also don’t be afraid to make friends at your dorm, mine had a pool table and I use to play all the time with my friends so many of us played that the dorm started having monthly tournaments, hope this helps

If it’s the first week literally every one is trying to make friends and know each other. Very low pressure. Since most classes you’ll be taking are gen eds, the safest opener is: “hi im John! I’m an X major. What’s your major?”
