I would think a friend would be less likely to think you were hitting on him. If one of my friends complimented me I’d be grateful but wouldn’t think much else of it unless it was part of a pattern of behavior she only exhibited towards me. If a random woman approached me and gave me a compliment, I might at least suspect interest depending on the compliment, her body language, and whether she tries to turn that into a conversation
