For my high school friends, I’m friends with their siblings or can rely on their parents or mutual friends to contact me. It’s different for my college friends because I don’t have snap or insta, so I’d only hear about a death in the friend group if someone directly told me :/

a friend of mine from high school died in my freshman year and a mutual friend who i hadnt spoken to in a while called me at 6:00am to let me know i suppose friends of friends keep you in the loop

I have a bunch of friends that if they died i wouldnt know until like if my mom told me. Or if we lost our snap score.
