It may be a combination of shyness and lack of trust. It’s not that you’ve personally wronged him, but a lot of men struggle with self image and worry about how they are viewed. Make him feel seen and appreciated, it may not work overnight but it can really let him know he exists

Put a sword in his hand. Fake or real, it matters not. It also works with dads, uncles, grandpas. Doesn’t matter. Something about handing a guy a sword reawakens some ancient instinct portion of his brain.

Just say “let me try something really quick” then go to your car or whatever and get a sword. Hand it to him. And ask whatever you want to ask. Swords are teddy bears for men. To be given a sword by a girl, again, it’s some kind of ancient instinct thing. I don’t know why it works, it just works.
