When I was with my ex I found it really hard to have any deeper than surface level conversations with her, mainly cause it seemed like she wouldn’t care, I encourage you to let him know you care about whatever he has to say and that you wish he would be more personal with you, even if he is just surface level, that lays the ground work for him to feel comfortable telling you things in the future
