Who ever said it, they’re wrong. The country is actively hunting working immigrants and trying to kill trans people for the “crime” of existing.

So you think it should say to allow people to convince you that you can’t be better because of your skin, sexuality or community you come from? I think you’ve lost me that doesn’t make sense

It’s not a matter of convincing. The state is targeting people based on those characteristics. It always has, in one degree or another. You can be all you can be, but it ends the second ICE comes knocking or you get doxxed by some state-favored fascist. Hell, it doesn’t even have to be the state- there’s plenty of professors that will grade a woman harsher than a man, or be more lenient to white students. Denying this fact enables those behaviors to continue unopposed.

This quote isn’t about diminishing what racism or sexism someones faces in their life. It does exist. It says don’t let someone tell you and do not believe that you are any lesser based on it.

What isn’t a matter of convincing? You really think that the individuals mentality of how they view themselves isn’t important? 😭 I’m sorry but you are really finding something to debate about that doesn’t need to be debated. I’m sure that you can agree with this quote. The quote is definitely insinuating that there are people who will tell those individuals that they’re lesser, that’s the whole point of the quote

That’s all well and good for self-confidence, but your material conditions can’t and won’t improve with this attitude. That’s what the “success in America” bit is about, your material conditions. People already know they deserve life and dignity, affirmations don’t suddenly change the minds of the apparatus trying to snuff that out. Success in America will be conditional on identity as long as we ignore that America the state cares about it.

Again, the state hates people based on identity. It’s not like someone being mean- it’s the weight of violence from all sides. You will not find success in America by just believing, you do it in spite of the system as it tries to end you. Your mentality is important, sure, but I don’t need to worry about being deported to a concentration camp in El Salvador.
