As a group that gets generalized quite often I would love to know your thoughts about something this person said. Do you agree? Why or why not

If someone says “Hispanic people are lazy” should Hispanic people not take issue with it if it doesn’t apply to them?

Generalization minimizes the issue more than people realize I’m black and a man generalization causes the issue to be brushed off because the sins of the few are associated with the whole instead of putting all of one demographic in a box because of a few we should be asking why is it like this and how can we solve it

i mean yeah. it’s the pancakes/waffles mean “the fact that x action is perpetuated mostly by y group is very bad” “but not everyone in y group does that! 😠” like ok, that’s just not the point at all. the issue is that action.

That doesn’t make it okay to generalize everyone in Y.

unfortunately a lot of the rules and stereotypes are rooted in people’s lived experiences. and it means they’re gonna live in a way that’s more risk avoidant. is all mexican food spicy? no, but does it mean my cousin won’t take my tapatio? yes. i think a lot of things get misinterpreted as hateful when in reality they’re manifestations of risk avoidance.

it might be “risk avoidance” in some cases sure, but most people would rather not be viewed as a risk, no matter what the group or stereotype is. The simplest solution to your example there is to just… ask you if it’s spicy. Consider the individual food or person rather than the group.
