Ask what he likes to do in his free time. When he lists some things maybe he says something like watch movies or play video games. Ask which ones. He might take that and run and open up about his interests.

Ask him what his favorite game was as a kid. Says more about someone than their astrology sign. Hide and seek, flashlight tag, tag, that sort of thing.

Ask him if he has any pets? If he does, ask follow up questions. I’d not, ask what pet he would like to have? And why?
