I read books on occasion. I mostly read manga in my free time if I’m feeling it, but otherwise I try to make time during my week to read a little bit of books. Right now I’m reading Hyperion which is a pretty decent sci fi book

I’m reading Dune: God Emperor right now. Love the book, gonna finish up the series and then start on my hopelessly long reading list with all the books I’ve been putting off

if you are interested and getting into more literature you can listen to audiobooks doing anything really on long drives, or cleaning or right before you go to sleep. it's how I got back into reading bc it's alao hard for me to just sit down and read ya know? plus the people who narrate the books are usually voice actors so it makes it a lot more engaging

But I’ve been working my way through the Poirot novels again. It’s been years since I last read them and I’ve just checked out a copy of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Does listening to audiobooks count as reading? And if so wouldn’t listening to long form YouTube videos also count. (Be it about science, political theory, history, true crime, or weird internet drama) Since you are getting information through auditory means?

I'm going to have to disagree. I feel like that be more of an equivalent to a podcast. Since they are more forms of commentary than like a novel. An audiobook is just someone reading the book outloud whereas one of those long form youtube videos abt various topics usually are a compilation of research from different sources.

Well then I can argue that they’re reading a script and a script is like a book… Like have you ever read Shakespeare in a class or something like that… that’s technically a script.

yes i have but it's not really a book. it's a script. i actually read plays all the time, but if that was the case then seeing movies and tv shows and plays and musicals would also count as reading when they don't. if you are listening to an audio book of one person reading like a Tennessee Williams play the yes but again a long form video essay isn't storytelling. it's an gathering of information and research told in a presentational style. like listening to a presentation in class

this isn't to say you aren't learning and taking in valuable information and that it isn't a respectable hobby though! i myself love a good video essay but if someone told me they read and i asked them their favorite author and they told me a youtuber who hasn't written a book. i'd be confused. audiobooks don't have a visual element to it and i think that's what separates it from a script since scripts are specifically written to be performed.

there is a big difference between reading script and then watching the play/movie/video. like have you ever seen a shakespeare play?
