kinda strange, sure, but not necessarily a bad thing by itself. Might’ve previously had bad experiences and was scared of causing another, or feels too awkward to ask for consent without more engagement. I would say this would be a thing to ask him if you were still together, but if it’s over that’s probably not appropriate.
