I mean the concept of a “centrist” is just someone who seeks a compromise between two positions. They aren’t inherently in the center of the political spectrum, they’re in the center of the two opposing viewpoints being discussed. In America, even Bernie sanders is just a democratic socialist. It’s an objective fact that ideologies much further left of his exist, while the American far right is just about as far right as it can get. The frame of the conversation is shifted right.
Yes i agree but i think a lot of people who claim to be centrist are often pushed more right by the left growing more left. Idk if that makes sense but as the left gets more progressive the line that borders center shifts to still have a centralist view and the original centrists are now right of that line
This is completely valid, pushing the bounds of the conversation is a serious political strategy, because even if people disagree with an opinion, it gains grounds and validity purely from the fact that they have to contend with it. Politicians on either side do this, and it’s become significantly easier with the advent of the internet, which is a huge problem in many regards. Up until recently, the conversation in America had unambiguously been shifting further left over time…
…but when Trump got involved in politics, he started pushing things pretty heavily in the other direction. Trump is better at pushing the conversation further in his favor than left leaning politicians like Bernie Sanders because (this isn’t slander, it’s just a fact), Trump doesn’t have any problem spreading rhetoric he knows to be untrue. This means he can push the bounds further, faster, by making whatever claim is most out there, and forcing others to treat those claims as legitimate stances
