I think they mean so that you’re crossing the intersection into the correct lane on the other side instead of switching in the middle where there are no lines and the lineup is sometimes lopsided so it’s not clear which lane corresponds to the one on the other side instead
The ones directly next to me? Yes, but it’s scary. I like to keep my eyes on the road in front of me most of the time and navigate by what’s in front of me. That’s why lane-lines are useful; they’re in front of you so you can stay in your lane and avoid side-swiping people even while keeping your eyes forward
