He probably is into you and wants to date and/or link up if you’re single (or not in an exclusive relationship) and interested. And/or he doesn’t want to inadvertently be a homewrecker and express any interest he may have if you’re already in a happy and exclusive relationship.

Okay, thank you. I wanted to be friends with the guy but don’t want anything to do with dating (I’m single, to be clear). I was upset to hear that from my friends and really wanted to be sure that he wasn’t just trying to be courteous. Apparently he talks about me a lot to them but he hasn’t made any effort to know me personally, which makes me uncomfortable. Nice guy, but I feel like I’m more of a concept to him rather than a real person.
