Dude sounds depressed. Maybe give him some more time to open up? He’s probably used to women ghosting him within the first few messages so, maybe a self fulfilling prophecy , but he doesn’t take the convo very seriously at first

Also asking him if he travelled for the holidays when he already told you that he wasn’t able to celebrate seems like you didn’t really read or take what he was saying seriously. He didn’t travel, he didn’t even celebrate. As he said, he was working.

I know what he does, he is a firefighter. He could have been working on new years and travelled for Christmas, idk
